I tested different story lines and tossed the bad ones and it’s quite something what a stranger in Iowa will buy from another in California over the phone. I laced my stories with dangerous words that leavened investing with high adventure. My clients didn’t invest in the future, they bankrolled it; they didn’t build wealth, they juiced their portfolios; they didn’t own shares of stock, they had skin in the game. I spoke of my sources on the inside and how I’d already said too much.
Every spirited investor wants to play robber baron or corporate raider, and if he can’t, then his badass banker sure can—villainy by proxy. Riches and emancipation from his subordinate life—what greater enticement could I extend? The slave to his stuff and wife mounted up for the Great Escape. And what better route than a hush-hush investment in the Next Big Thing?
